Staff Training

STAFF TRAINING WALES (Cadair Idris)

Staff training is fundamental in the development of delivering safe and structured adventure training activities thorough out Sussex Wing. It can take up to 3 years to gain the MLTE Mountain Leader Summer Award (MLS) and just as long for more specialist qualifications like Single Pitch Award (SPA) for climbing.  All staff need to be kept current and proficient in all there key skill areas. Staff also need to be pushed outside there comfort zone whist training, so when they are looking after cadets, they remain safe and confident and will make the right decisions if a problem arises.

If you are interested in joining the team please contact the Wing Adventure Training Tecnical Officer watto@swatt.org , you would be expected to have a keen interesting adventure training, hold a formal qualification in outdoor pursuits, or be expected to complete a qualification within the year of you joining.  You would also have to commit to working with the team for at least 4 weekends and one week per year.

About the Team

Sussex Wing Adventure Training Team was formed in 1997, this was mainly due to changes within the Corps around staff requiring formal qualifications and demands for more adventure training activities. The team is made up from volunteers from all around the Wing who have an active interest in adventure training and outdoor pursuits. We currently have 20 members; all have various qualifications in outdoor pursuits, from Basic Expedition Leader to Mountain Leader. Several members of the team have specialist qualification, dealing with canoeing to climbing, as well as power boating and sailing qualifications.
The team is used to run all of the Wings main adventure training activities. These include our two annual adventure training camps in Windermere and Llanbedr, the Southdown’s night navigation challenge, Crowborough field weekend competition and staff training weeks and weekends accross the UK.  The team also helps with running and delivering the Sports Leader - Basic Expedition Leader Award and the Duke of Edinburgh's Award to our squadron staff and senior cadets, as well as helping individual Squadron with all aspects of adventure training.
